6 Causes of Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn's Disease and Personalized Treatment

Holistic Approach

The human body is an
organic system.

Western medicine does not fully understand the exact causes of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, so research is limited to methods of suppressing inflammation. In cases where inflammation cannot be suppressed, surgical procedures are often used to remove parts of the intestine.

This approach is flawed because it looks only at the area where inflammation occurred, rather than viewing the human body as a whole. The human body cannot be separated into individual parts; it is a living system where the whole interacts organically and influences one another.

HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic has identified the causes of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease through over 20 years of research since 2007, and we have increased treatment success rates by classifying the overall patterns into 6 categories for targeted therapy.

Most patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have a combination of 2 or more of these 6 causes. By eliminating these causes one by one, the immune system stabilizes sequentially, preventing inflammation from occurring.

6 causes in combination.

6 Types of Causes

6 Traditional Korean Medicine Types

Let's look at the 6 types one by one.

TYPE 01

Upper Digestive Tract Type

This is the most common type among the various categories of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

It refers to cases where patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease experience abdominal pain and diarrhea due to intestinal inflammation, while also suffering from discomfort in the upper digestive tract.

Key symptoms include loss of appetite, inability to finish a single serving despite being an adult, and experiencing indigestion or bloating when overeating. Patients may feel nauseous, dislike the smell of food, frequently retch, or vomit. They may also experience heartburn or acid reflux. Some patients must go to the bathroom during or immediately after a meal.

Frequent indigestion, uncomfortable burping, and severe motion sickness are also common. Stress can also trigger indigestion. Many also have reflux esophagitis.

While experiencing such indigestion alongside inflammatory diarrhea, their abdomen may feel cold, or diarrhea may worsen when consuming cold food.

TYPE 02

Intestinal Inflammation Type

This second type is also frequently seen; these patients generally have no digestive disorders but are highly sensitive to spicy food.

Eating spicy food easily causes heartburn or diarrhea. When experiencing this type of diarrhea, the area around the anus may feel stinging or burning. This phenomenon is known as 'anal burning' because it feels like the anus is on fire.

Even though the frequency of diarrhea is high and stools are loose, patients often experience a feeling of incomplete evacuation or tenesmus after having a bowel movement.

Patients with this type often show only diarrhea and bloody stools without any digestive disorders. Occasionally, they may experience heat rising due to inflammation or a feeling of chest tightness.

TYPE 03

Respiratory Type

This type usually involves people who are sensitive to cold and suffer from rhinitis symptoms, showing allergic reactions to seasonal changes, cold winds, or dust.

Rhinitis symptoms worsen with seasonal changes, cold air, dust, or pollen, which then leads to abdominal pain or diarrhea. Slight digestive issues may sometimes accompany this.

This can manifest as either clear, runny rhinitis or hypertrophic rhinitis where the nose feels completely blocked. Since rhinitis is also an immune system disorder, it often needs to be treated together.

Or, this category includes people who feel cold easily and have colder hands and feet than others, even without rhinitis symptoms.

In the case of the respiratory type, digestive problems may occur simultaneously, and it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from the upper digestive tract type if they overlap.

If 2 or more causes overlap, they can be treated step-by-step.

TYPE 04

Abdominal Cold Type

The typical case for this type is simply severe diarrhea combined with a sensation that the abdomen is cold, without other symptoms.

In particular, consuming cold water, drinks, or cold food makes the diarrhea worse. Patients usually say that although their digestion is fine, they are afraid to eat because the diarrhea is so severe. This type of diarrhea can be very serious, often occurring 10-15 times a day.

Because they often cannot hold their urge to go to the bathroom for even 1-2 minutes, it is common for these patients to wear adult diapers.

The symptoms are extremely severe and often do not respond to steroids or other Western medications, making this a type that is difficult to treat in Western medicine.

It is a type that must receive appropriate treatment tailored to the cause to show improvement.

TYPE 05

Edema Type

This type involves inflammation and edema (swelling) due to poor circulation of body fluids.

The face, hands, or feet often swell, especially in the morning. The swelling might go down slightly as they go about their day, or in severe cases, the swelling persists throughout the day.

Patients often urinate small amounts frequently and often have a feeling of residual urine, as if they haven't emptied their bladder completely. Occasionally, they may suffer from nocturia, waking up at night to urinate.

Because body fluid circulation is not smooth, there may be some degree of thirst.

TYPE 06

Colonic Dysfunction Type

The sixth type is when colonic movement function is reduced.

Because bowel movement is reduced and weak, patients often find it difficult to pass stool even when they feel the urge and go to the bathroom.

The stool is not diarrhea but has a formed shape, sometimes coming out in chunks like rabbit droppings. Alternatively, the stool may be loose like diarrhea, but the patient often struggles to pass it, feeling as if they are constipated.

Also, because the colon lacks the strength to push out the stool, there is a feeling of incomplete evacuation, as if the bowel was not fully emptied.

This is the only type among the various categories of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease that is not diarrhea-predominant. Patients with colonic dysfunction experience significant discomfort when having bowel movements, often thinking, 'I wish I could just have a refreshing case of diarrhea instead.'

In the colonic dysfunction type, the colon needs to be stimulated to move more actively for stool to pass smoothly. Once the patient can pass stool comfortably, the feeling of incomplete evacuation disappears, the frequency of bowel movements decreases, and inflammation subsides.

Treating this type is not very difficult, but since treatment must continue until strength returns to the colon so the patient can pass stool easily without herbal medicine, it may take longer to complete the treatment.

Patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease may have only one of these six types, but most patients have two or more simultaneously. We provide herbal medicine treatment tailored to the individual causes present.

Treatment Process

Step-by-step
Targeted Treatment

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease cannot be treated with a single medication.
It is a condition that requires changing prescriptions according to the cause and current status.

STEP 01

In-depth Consultation

For the first visit, it is highly recommended that you visit the clinic for a thorough consultation.

STEP 02

Progress and Customized Prescription

Afterward, you only need to visit once every 2-3 months.

STEP 03

Combined Acupuncture/Pharmacopuncture

If you have abdominal pain or other symptoms, combining acupuncture or pharmacopuncture can speed up the treatment process.

STEP 04

Conclusion of Treatment

Treatment can be concluded after abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody stools have ceased, inflammatory markers have stabilized, Western medications have been discontinued, and endoscopic improvement has been confirmed.

Abdominal pain and diarrhea can stop,
and you can return to your normal life.
