Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Case:
The Path to Recovery for a Patient with Slow Progress
Beyond symptom relief, toward complete normalization of inflammation levels
History of a Middle-Aged Patient
HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic has been specializing in research on ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease since 2007. The patient was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in June 2023, discontinued treatment after experiencing side effects from initial Western medication, and visited our clinic in March 2025 due to an increase in inflammation levels. The patient had been concerned as there was no significant improvement despite receiving treatment at another Korean medicine clinic for 6 months.
Status at Initial Visit (March 2025)
- Fecal Calprotectin: 322 points (Borderline)
- Physical Indices: BMI 17.5, Weight 45kg
- Symptoms: Mucous stool once a day, digestive issues due to food intake of 0.5 portion
The Key to Treatment is 'The Ability to Finish Successfully'
Many patients struggle with choosing a Korean medicine clinic. The most important factors are 'whether there are actual clinical cases' and 'whether this has been proven through papers.' It is important to find a place that holds completed treatment cases where not just simple improvement was achieved, but where Western medication was completely discontinued and inflammation levels were normalized.
Treatment Progress and Numerical Changes
Digestive Treatment and Initial Improvement
As a result of prescribing to improve digestive function first, the calprotectin level dropped to 76 in June, and the fecal occult blood test turned negative.
Slow Recovery and Changes in Prescription
Although there was a plateau with levels rising again, we did not change the prescription out of impatience but instead observed the progress and went through precise adjustments to the prescription. On October 16, fecal calprotectin was completely normalized at 33 points.
Complete Treatment Termination
Finally, the fecal calprotectin level dropped to 25 points, and the treatment was concluded. The patient also recovered their health with a 2kg weight gain.
