Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Case:
Precision Treatment Identifying the Root Cause of Recurrence

Beyond symptom relief, toward complete normalization of calprotectin levels

A Long-term Patient's Story

At HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic, we have been researching and treating ulcerative colitis since 2007. This patient was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis starting with bloody stools in 2007 and had already been battling the disease for 7 years at the time of their first visit in August 2014. It was a case of typical colorectal hypofunction (constipation-type) ulcerative colitis, where constipation was the root cause, leading to poor response to anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids.

Initial Status

Status at First Visit (2014)

  • Bowel Movement Pattern: Once every 3–12 days
  • Symptoms: Accompanied by bloody and mucus stools
  • Diagnosis Type: Colorectal hypofunction (constipation-type)
Insight

Why the Flow and Sequence of Treatment Matters

Over 80% of ulcerative colitis patients have two or more underlying causes. In the past, failure to distinguish these led to prolonged treatment periods, but we have now perfected a prescribing technique based on the sequence of these causes. If the treatment order is incorrect, symptoms will not improve; therefore, a precise analysis of the causes must come first.

Treatment Progress and Numerical Changes

Long-term treatment outcomes through over 10 years of follow-up observation

2014~2016
Treatment for Colorectal Hypofunction

Primary treatment completed by normalizing colorectal function through constipation medication management. Subsequent recurrence was successfully treated with concurrent upper gastrointestinal prescriptions.

2025~2026
Complete Normalization and Maintenance

Calprotectin levels recovered to normal levels within 2 months, dropping from 142 to 6.5. Currently, the patient maintains perfect health, well past the 7-year mark of their battle with the disease.
