Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Case:
Health Managed through 'Chimi-byeong' (Preventive Medicine)
A treatment record from HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic that goes beyond symptom relief to correct the root cause of inflammation
One Year of Daily Life After Treatment
Hello. We are HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic, having researched ulcerative colitis since 2007. A year after completing treatment in October 2025, the mother of a patient in her 30s called us. She mentioned that while her daughter is living a healthy daily life, she wanted to get a prescription for herbal medicine out of concern that her condition might worsen again.
This aligns with the spirit of the Korean medicine principle, 'Treating the unmanifested disease' (preventing a disease before it develops rather than treating it after it has already occurred).
Condition at Time of Visit (March 2025)
- Diagnosis: Ulcerative Colitis (Diagnosed at a general hospital in November 2024)
- Main Symptoms: Bloody stool, mucous stool, frequent flatulence, stomatitis, reflux esophagitis
- Notes: Complained of cold hands and feet, chronic fatigue, and facial swelling every morning
The Correlation Between Calprotectin and Endoscopy
Why you must look carefully even if the levels are normal
Calprotectin Test
A test that measures inflammatory substances in the stool. While levels rise if inflammation is widespread and severe, you should not blindly rely on the numbers alone as inflammation that is like a faint spark can still result in a normal reading.
Endoscopy
This is a process that must be verified at the final stage of treatment. Visual confirmation is essential because inflammation can be observed during an endoscopy even when calprotectin levels are normal.
Summary of Treatment Core
Sequential Prescription by Cause
We sequentially addressed overlapping causes such as cold abdomen, gastrointestinal issues, and inflammatory constitution. We also restored intestinal immunity by combining lifestyle habit corrections, such as discontinuing acid reflux medication.
Successful Remission
By understanding the temporary healing reactions that occur after stopping western medication as a 'process of peeling an onion' and continuing the treatment, we successfully concluded the treatment after confirming clean mucosa during an endoscopy in September 2025.
