17-Year Ulcerative Colitis:
Complete Resolution of Inflammation and Endoscopic Remission

A record of going beyond symptom relief to restoring the health of cellular division

17 Years of Recurring Pain

Hello. We are HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic, which has been researching and treating ulcerative colitis since 2007. This patient began experiencing bloody stools in 2008 and had suffered from recurring symptoms for over 15 years.

Symptoms worsened starting in October 2024, and following an endoscopy in December that showed severe inflammation, the patient visited our clinic in February 2025.

Initial Status

Key Metrics at Time of Visit

  • Fecal Calprotectin: 1848 points
  • Fecal Occult Blood Test: 290 points (Positive)
  • Main Symptoms: Bloody stool, mucous stool, urgency, tenesmus, 4-10 bowel movements per day
Insight

No bloody stool does not mean no inflammation

Many ulcerative colitis patients feel relieved when they no longer have bloody stools. However, microscopic bleeding that is invisible to the naked eye may still exist, and if calprotectin levels remain high despite the absence of symptoms, intestinal inflammation is continuing. If inflammation recurs for over 20 years, the risk of DNA replication errors occurring during cell division, which can develop into cancer cells, is extremely high.

Treatment Progress Summary

February-June 2025
Normalization of Inflammation Levels

After 4 months of herbal medicine treatment, fecal calprotectin levels plummeted from 1848 to 8.5, reaching normal levels. Bloody stools and urgency disappeared, and bowel movement frequency stabilized.

March 2026
Confirmation of Complete Mucosal Healing

Endoscopy results confirmed a completely clean state from the sigmoid colon to the rectum, including areas where inflammation had previously been severe, with no inflammation present. Blood vessels were clearly visible, and inflammation and bleeding were completely resolved.
