Ulcerative Colitis While Preparing for Pregnancy:
Normalization of Inflammation Levels Through Herbal Medicine Treatment
Restoring gut health with treatment from HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic when conventional medication is not an option
Patient Situation
The patient had been experiencing diarrhea, bloody stools, and mucus in stools since April 2025, leading to a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis in July. As she was preparing for pregnancy, she was using only Pentasa suppositories instead of oral medication. At the time of her first visit, the suppositories had reduced the bloody stools, but she was still experiencing persistent tenesmus (a feeling of incomplete defecation) and mucus in the stool.
Key Symptoms at Time of Visit
- Defecation: 1-2 times a day, thin and normal stool consistency
- Symptoms: Accompanied by tenesmus, bloody stools, and mucus in stools
- Calprotectin: 70 points (as of July 30, 2025)
Treatment Progress and Changes in Metrics
Starting with the stage of treating the upper digestive tract, we finely adjusted the prescriptions to stages B and C to alleviate symptoms. Although there was a temporary rise in calprotectin levels during the treatment, we identified external factors such as a cold and continued the treatment consistently, which resulted in the inflammation levels dropping stably to 11 points.
Ultimately, the tenesmus, bloody stools, and mucus in the stools all disappeared, and the patient maintained a normal bowel movement frequency of once every 1-2 days. We plan to conclude the treatment after a future endoscopic examination.
