Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Case:
Limitations of Biologics and Root-Cause Treatment
Reaching full recovery by resolving the root cause of bloody stools and inflammation that could not be resolved by Western medical treatment
HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic Treatment Case
HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic has been researching ulcerative colitis since 2007. This case documents a patient who visited us because their symptoms did not fully improve despite the administration of the biological injection, Entyvio (Vedolizumab).
The patient had experienced all available Western medical treatments, including 5-ASA, steroids, immunosuppressants, and biologics, but continued to suffer from bloody stools and abdominal pain.
Status at Initial Visit (March 2025)
- Main Symptoms: Bloody stool, mucus stool, fecal urgency, abdominal pain
- Lab Values: Calprotectin 1093, Occult blood test 655 (Positive)
- Notes: Accompanied by upper gastrointestinal disorders and abdominal coldness
Core of Treatment: Sequential Root-Cause Resolution
We fundamentally eliminated intestinal inflammation by approaching issues in order, starting from upper gastrointestinal problems to inflammation and respiratory issues.
Step 1: Improvement of Upper Gastrointestinal System
We treated inflammation and upper GI issues simultaneously to restore digestive function and overall systemic health.
Step 2: Treatment of Inflammation and Respiratory System
After stabilizing the upper GI tract, we shifted to prescriptions for colon-specific inflammation and respiratory issue resolution.
Treatment Results: From Calprotectin 1093 to Below 4
Within 2 months of starting treatment, the calprotectin level dropped sharply to below 3.8, and the Entyvio injections were gradually discontinued. As of the final check in August 2026, all test results are normal, and the patient has been maintaining perfect remission for over 5 months without any injections.
