Pancolitis Ulcerative Colitis:
Achieving Complete Remission Without Steroids
A record of complete remission for a severe case of pancolitis through systematic herbal medicine treatment
Patient History
In June 2025, a patient diagnosed with pancolitis ulcerative colitis visited HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic. Diarrhea, which began in January 2024, had worsened. After diagnosis at a general hospital, the patient was taking Pentasa, but due to worsening symptoms, they had been prescribed steroids (8 tablets of Solondo).
Key Symptoms at Time of Admission
- Bowel Movements: Watery diarrhea 1–6 times a day, urgency, bloody stools (2–3 times a week)
- Abdominal Pain: Abdominal pain, tenesmus, and need to use the restroom after eating
- Test Results: Calprotectin 723 points, fecal occult blood test over 1200 points
Treatment Process and Progress
Inflammation levels were normalized through staged prescriptions based on Traditional Korean Medicine diagnostic analysis.
Initial Stabilization
Treatment began without steroid use; the frequency of bowel movements decreased to 1–2 times a day, and bloody stools disappeared. In the August tests, the calprotectin level improved to 84 points.
Complete Remission and Healing
Prescriptions were optimized, resulting in a calprotectin level of 26 points in December, and maintaining a perfect normal range below 3.8 after January 2026. Even after discontinuing Pentasa, a normal state has persisted for over 3 months, and endoscopy confirmed that inflammation had completely vanished.
