Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Case:
Definitive Changes in a Short Period
Customized prescriptions and treatment progress for a respiratory-type patient
A Two-Month Golden Time Before Emigration
Hello. This is HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic, where we have been treating ulcerative colitis since 2007. The case we are introducing today is the story of a patient who visited our clinic urgently before immigrating. At the time of the visit, the patient only had two months left before their departure date.
The patient had been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2022 and was using Pentasa and suppositories, but symptoms such as bloody stool, mucus in stool, and tenesmus were persisting.
Key Symptoms at Time of Visit
- Bowel status: Persistent bloody stool, tenesmus, loose stool, urgent bowel movements
- Respiratory characteristics: Globus sensation in the throat, thin phlegm, history of rhinitis
- Systemic characteristics: Severe sensitivity to cold, cold hands/feet and lower abdomen
- Abdominal pain: Accompanied by upper abdominal pain, worsens when consuming cold food
Why the 'Respiratory Type'?
A notable point in this patient's case is the correlation between respiratory-type symptoms and ulcerative colitis. When the body lacks heat, function first declines in the extremities furthest from the heart, such as the hands, feet, and the colon. This patient was a respiratory-type who had suffered from rhinitis and showed a typical 'reduced heat circulation' pattern, characterized by high sensitivity to cold and a cold abdomen. For this type, inflammation can be treated by warmly reinforcing colon function.
Treatment Results and Numerical Changes
Objective indicators confirmed through two months of intensive treatment
Rapid Decrease in Inflammation Markers
The fecal calprotectin level, which was 765 points before treatment, decreased by half to 353 points after one month, and reached the normal range at 48 points before departure.
Improvement of Respiratory Symptoms
In addition to the ulcerative colitis symptoms, the chronic globus sensation in the throat and thin phlegm improved by over 50-70%, proving the accuracy of the prescription direction.
