Case Studies on Traditional Korean Medical
Treatment and Management for Overseas Patients with Ulcerative Colitis
A phased treatment process through in-person consultations and continuous monitoring of inflammatory markers
The Importance of Treating Overseas Patients
HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic has been researching ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease since 2007. With the recent advancement of AI technology and sharing treatment information via YouTube, inquiries from overseas compatriots have surged. Today, we would like to look at the process of how overseas patients receive traditional Korean medical treatment through the cases of two patients in their 50s living in Europe and North America.
Case 1: Patient Residing in Europe (Ideal Treatment Pattern)
A case where in-person consultations were possible due to regular travel between Korea and Europe for work.
At the time of the initial visit, the patient was using mesalazine and suppositories, but experienced immediate bloody stools upon cessation. Each time the patient entered Korea, we checked calprotectin levels and adjusted the herbal medicine prescription. As a result of consistent management, even after tapering off suppositories and mesalazine, the patient has maintained normal bowel movements without blood as of 2026, showing a stable recovery trend.
Case 2: Patient Residing in North America (Based on Phone Consultations)
A case where the patient overcame the situation with a strong will, undergoing treatment remotely as visiting Korea was difficult.
Since direct in-person consultation and abdominal palpation were impossible, we maintained detailed communication via KakaoTalk. Although there were periods when symptoms fluctuated, the patient's positive mindset and proactive feedback led to a gradual alleviation of symptoms. Currently, bowel spasms have significantly decreased and the patient continues to have normal bowel movements.
