Clinical Case

Suspected Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease:
Diarrhea and Inflammation Following Antibiotic Use

A fundamental treatment case based on Traditional Korean Medicine principles, regardless of formal diagnosis.

Background and Patient History

Hello. We are HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic, where we have been researching and treating ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease since 2007. This case is about a patient who visited us in May 2025, suspecting they had inflammatory bowel disease.

The patient had been under extreme stress and followed an instant-food-heavy diet since August 2024, followed by long-term antibiotic use for dermatitis in October. After that, they suffered from persistent diarrhea starting in January 2025, which did not stop until May, leading them to seek out HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic.

Initial Status

Primary Symptoms at Visit

  • Bowel Status: Diarrhea 3 times a day; accompanied by bloody and mucus stools starting 2 weeks prior.
  • Presumed Cause: Worsening intestinal environment following antibiotic use.
  • Test Results: Fecal Calprotectin 2087 points (severe level of inflammation).

Treatment Progress and Changes in Metrics

This is the process of lowering inflammation levels to the normal range through thorough management via Korean medicine examination.

May - June 2025
Start of Treatment and Initial Improvement

Treatment began without Western diagnosis, utilizing prescriptions based on Traditional Korean Medicine principles to resolve intestinal issues. As of June 10, it was confirmed that the patient began passing normal stools starting May 30, with bloody and mucus stools disappearing, and abdominal pain subsiding.

September 2025 - March 2026
Normalization of Inflammation Levels
  • Calprotectin: 2087 points → 124 points (Sep) → 53 points (Dec) → 18 points (Mar)

While it is easy for patients to become lax during the latter stages of treatment, by adhering to principles and continuing the herbal medicine, inflammation levels dropped to 18 points, resulting in a full recovery of health.

Advice from HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic

Early detection and consistent management are key for inflammatory bowel disease. In particular, the instant-food-based diet of modern people is a major factor triggering autoimmune diseases. Please refer to our website for further Inquiry and detailed information.
